It's bizarre - there seem to be only 10 people in the state of California who want to sell the Fairgrounds. 50,000 people have signed petitions and cards asking for the sale to be stopped. A broad coalition including Friends of Harbors, Beaches and Parks, Sierra Club, California Labor Council, Ironworkers Local 416, SEIU 1000, over 20 Orange County cities, Costa Mesa Sanitary District, Orange Coast College and others has formed to oppose the sale. The sale will kill 100 jobs at the Fairgrounds. 3000 small family businesses which set up shop at the Fairgrounds each year will have to find a new place to make their sales. And, Orange Coast College, which uses the Fairgrounds parking lots for overflow parking, will have to build a $40 million parking garage once the Fairgrounds goes away.
And legislators, when presented with the reality that Orange County legislators were lied to when they were told Costa Mesa supported this measure when the City had already passed a resolution saying explicitly they did not want the property to be sold, get on board with stopping the sale.
Here are our local Orange County lawmakers talking about the sale.
