Costa Mesa City Council voted unanimously on February 16, 2010, to put a measure on the June 2010 ballot to protect the current uses of the Fairgrounds. Costa Mesa will spend about $200,00 for this effort to prevent the 150 acre property from becoming a shopping mall, sports arena or dense urban infill housing.
The City feels that the item needs to go before the voters at the first opportunity because of the uncertainty surrounding what the State wants to do with the property. The property was put up for sale at the request of the Fair Board. Craig Realty, a developer of outlet malls, was the high bidder at the January 2010 auction. Since the auction, DGS and the Governor's office have been silent on what the fate of the property will be.
