Costa Mesa apparently reserves the right to force a business to change the name of the business in order to rent city facilities. Are the names possibly offensive, like "Live Nude Girls PeeWee Football League" or "We Like to Drink Like Fish Junior Swim League"?
Uh, no. Liga Azteca Basketball (aka Aztec Basketball League) changed their name to Costa Mesa Weekend Basketball League in order to secure a lease to use the gym at the Costa Mesa Downtown Recreation Center. During the June 24, 2009 Parks and Recreation hearing one resident raised the issue of the "ethnicity" of the league and discussed the matter with Mayor Allan Mansoor. Mayor Mansoor discussed the matter with the owner of Aztec League Basketball, Rigoberto Bautista. Bautista agreed to the name change to be able to obtain the gym time he needs for his league.
The Costa Mesa City Council approved the lease of the gym to Rigoberto Bautista to operate the Costa Mesa Weekend Basketball League on Sundays by a vote of 4-1. Councilman Eric Bever, who appealed the Parks and Planning Commission decision, was the only no vote.
Mayor Mansoor, predictably, inserted a requirement in the contract with Bautista that requires his league to give preference to Costa Mesa residents who can produce a drivers license with a Costa Mesa address or another form of Federally acceptable legal ID to establish residency. Sometimes Mayor Mansoor is just so predictable.
The contract with the "formerly known as Aztec League but now known as Costa Mesa Weekend Basketball League" is expected to bring as much as $43,000 to financially strapped Costa Mesa.
