Youth sports leagues, basketball and flag football, were free for Costa Mesa residents until the current budget was passed. On July 22, the Costa Mesa Parks and Recreation Commission will consider charging for youth sports. Without these fees, the programs may be discontinued.
Under the proposal, the 6 week basketball program will cost $39 per child enrolled. The 6 week flag football program will cost $58 per child enrolled. Projected revenues from the new charges are $38,600 from flag football and $36,500 from basketball.
On Monday night, City Council will consider whether Aztec Basketball League will be allowed to use the gym at the Downtown Recreation Center. Allowing Aztec Basketball to rent the gym is expected to bring $43,000 per year to Costa Mesa city coffers.
