The newest Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) report shows July's 2009 unemployment rate dropping slightly to 9.4%, down from 9.5% in June 2009. For adult men, the unemployment rate was 9.8%, down from 10% in June. Unemployment among adult women dropped from 7.6% in June to 7.5% in July. During this current downturn, unemployment among women has been about 2% lower than for men. The leveling off of unemployment numbers is an indicator a recovery is starting to sprout.
Several areas of the economy have seen the numbers of jobs lost decrease - professional and business services, transportation and warehousing, and financial activities. Slowing of job loss in these sectors indicate a recovery is starting.
