Economic downturns like the one we are currently in have not been seen in recent year and present challenges for parents and teachers. If you family or some one you know has lost their job, how do you talk about it? How do you help kids whose parents still have jobs build empathy without creating a "monster under the bed"? Teaching Tolerance, from the Southern Poverty Law Center, has created materials and activities which can help teachers, families and others who work with young people talk about this hard topic.
Unequal Employment teaches students about the growth in unemployment from 2007 through 2009 and looks at the impact across states, racial and ethnic groups. The activity is designed for use by students in grades 3 thru 12 and builds both language arts and math skills.
Teaching in a Downturn has interviews from Meizhu Lui, author of The Color of Wealth: The Story Behind the US Racial Wealth Divide, and developmental psychologist Melanie Killen.
