Angry, disappointed, and anxious Fullerton College students filled the four corners of Lemon and Chapman in Fullerton on March 4, 2010, as part of the Day of Action for public education. Drivers passing thru the intersection honked their support. Semis driving down Chapman sounded their air horns for the students crowded on the corners. Students chanted, "Our Choice, Our Future". Fullerton College band set up their chairs and music stands on the grass and played "Tom Sawyer" by Rush, among others.
Students were out in the street to protest the tuition and fee hikes. The compounding price increase for education have left some students unable to afford to finish their educations. For the students who can afford college, many Fullerton College students find themselves stuck at Fullerton College, unable to move forward to a Cal State school or a UC because there are not available seats for them at those schools.
Educating California: Choices for the Future published by the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) explains how California needs more college graduates just to keep up with employer demand at a time when public colleges and universities are cutting back. The CSU system cut enrollment by 40,000 students, which is the number of degrees granted each year by the private colleges in California. The cuts are the same as if the private colleges simply shut down for a year.
