Teachers in the La Habra City Schools (elementary schools) walked off the job today to protest contract talks that had broken off after district officials insisted on mimicing the Capo Unified School District by asking for permanent pay cuts from teachers. Other districts have asked teachers to take temporary pay cuts and furlough days - both Capo Unified and La Habra City have asked for permanent pay cuts. The request of a permanent pay cut is not supported by fact finding.

The permanent cuts include a 2% salary cut retroactive from Nov. 1, two nonpaid furlough days in the 2010-11 school year and two additional furlough days in 2011-12. The cost for health benefits will also increase beginning July. The cuts will cost individual La Habra teachers – whose average salary is about $63K – will be between $14 and $20K this year.
