39th Annual Candy Caneland and Craft Faire - Dec 5

Bring the whole family to the 39th annual Candy Caneland and Craft Faire on Saturday, December 5 at Ehlers Community Center, located at 8150 Knott Avenue. The event runs from 10am-4pm. See the community center transform into a winter wonderland with spectacular decorations and activities!

Free activities include a children's snow hill with a small slide for the little ones, and two big slides for the bigger kids and parents. There will also be a petting zoo, moonbounces, stage entertainment, and a visit from Santa Claus.

There will be over 100 craft venders selling homemade gifts, ornaments, jewelry, ceramics and more at reasonable prices. This huge event will also have non-profit groups selling delicious food and running game booths.

Event parking will be very limited at Ehlers Community Center. The public is encouraged to use the free shuttle bus which will be continuously running to and from Peak Park, 7225 El Dorado Dr., from 7am-5:00 p.m.

Buena Park General Plan Update - Nov 18

Buena Park is continuing the important task of updating its General Plan. Come to the open house, which will provide an overview of the General Plan Focus Areas and Preferred Land Use Alternative, as well as introduce the Draft General Plan Goals and Policies.  As part of the General Plan Update, an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) will be prepared to analyze the potential environmental impacts associated with the General Plan Update. 

The environmental scoping portion of the open house will provide you with an overview of the environmental review process and present an opportunity for you to comment on environmental topics of concern prior to preparation of the Draft EIR.  Members of the Project Team will be available to answer your questions. Drop in for 15 minutes or stay as long as you want.

Orange County Sanitation District to Address Cost Recovery and Potential Chemical Shortages

The Orange County Sanitation District (OCSD) treats the wastewater from the cities of La Habra, Brea, Fullerton, Anaheim, La Palma, Buena Park, Los Alamitos, Stanton, Seal Beach, Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley, Westminster, Garden Grove, Cypress, Santa Ana, Costa Mesa, Newport Beach, Orange, Villa Park, Tustin Placentia, Yorba Linda and Irvine.  OCSD is the agency responsible for maintaing the outfall pipes offshore. and is the third largest wastewater agency west of the Mississippi River.

OCSD is working on an update to the strategic plan to address the potential shortage of chemicals and getting better cost recovery from other agencies.  Both of these issues are key to the successful future operation of the District.

A reliable supply of quality chemicals is a requirement of operating a wastewater treatment facility.  Chemicals are used to mitigate odors, enhance settling of solids, reduce bacteria formation, and disinfect then dechlorinate the effluent prior to discharge.  

"Once on This Island" - Nov 27, 28, 29 and Dec 4, 5, 6

Buena Park Youth Theatre presents "Once on This Island", an almost non-stop song and dance which tells the story of Ti Moune, a poor peasant girl who rescues and falls in love with Daniel, a wealthy boy from the other side of her island. When Daniel is returned to his people, the fantastical gods who rule the island guide Ti Moune on a quest to test the strength of her love against the powerful forces of prejudice, hatred and death.

"Once on This Island" will be presented at the Buena Park High School Performing Arts Complex, 8833 Academy Drive, Buena Park, CA. The Complex is located at Academy Drive and Magnolia Avenue.

The show runs November 27, 28, 29 and again on December 4, 5,6.  Shows on Friday and Saturday evenings are at 7:30 PM. Saturday and Sunday matinees are at 2:30 PM.  Admission is $10 General, $8 Senior, $8 Children 12 and under.

OCTA Looking to Eliminate Routes - Give OCTA Feedback on These Proposals

OCTA is looking to restructure bus service to fit the available budget. Staff has prepared several proposals for bus service reductions and have taken the presentations to public meetings to get input.  OCTA has also bought ads and put comment cards on buses to get feedback on proposals.  

If you use one of these buses, please tell OCTA what will happen if the bus is no longer available to you. These routes are targeted for possible elimination.  When you buy a bus pass, drop off a comment card or a letter.  Attend the public meeting on October 26 at 9 AM at OCTA headquarters in Orange. Fill out a comment card and drop it in the mail. But, please, for your sake, let OCTA know if these bus service cuts will impact you.  If your school is impacted, have your teachers, professors, principals and deans call.  If your business is impacted, have the managers and human resources department call OCTA to let them know this is a problem.

The routes listed for elimination are given below, along with the major landmarks along the route.  If implemented, the routes will be eliminated starting in March 2010.

Fire Departments Have Open Houses This Weekend

National Fire Prevention Week is during October 5 thru October 10.  Visit a firehouse near you during this weekend during an Open House. These events are always a favorite with the kids because they get to meet firefighters, see the firetrucks close up, and learn what an important job firefighting is.  The firefighters also teach families and business owners how to protect themselves and their loved ones in the case of emergency.

2009 Coastal Cleanup Day is September 19

Ed Royce Welcomes Wally Herger, Encourager of Self-Proclaimed Terrorist

At a town hall event, a man stands up and proclaims himself to be a "proud right wing terrorist".  Representative Herger then calls him a "great American."

On September 19, Representative Ed Royce will welcome Wally Herger to a fundraiser at Knott's Berry Farm.  $200 gets you into the event where you will get to meet Royce and Herger and "get the latest updates on the health care debate at Knott's Berry Farm's Gold Rush Camp."  

At his own townhall, Royce told LaRouche supporters carrying "Obama as Hitler" signs to put the signs away. September 19 is Coastal and Inner-Coastal Watershed Clean-Up Day

Saturday, September 19, is the statewide Coastal Cleanup and the 13th Annual Inner Coastal and Watershed Cleanup Day. Many cities, agencies and organizations participate in this yearly event to build awareness of how trash and debris clog our local creeks, beaches, ponds and watersheds.

Local organizers for the event include the Ocean Conservancy and Trails4All.  Trails4All has a list of clean-up activities on the website.  Sign up thru your city or the OC Parks and Recreation department.

Local cities and areas participating in include Aliso Viejo, Anaheim, Black Star Canyon, Brea, Buena Park, Canyon View Park,  Costa Mesa, Dana Paoint, Fullerton, Glenwood/Glenbrook Park,  Huntington Beach, Irvine, Laguna Hill, Laguna Niguel, Laguna Woods, La Habra, Lake Forest, La Palma,Long Beach, Mission Viejo, Newport Beach, O'Neill Regional Park, Orange, Rancho Santa Margarita, San Clemente, San Juan Capistrano, Santa Ana, Seal Beach, Silverado-Modjeska Canyon, Trabuco Canyon, Westminster, Yorba Linda, Yorba Regional Park.  

Keeping trash and litter out of the water makes the areas more user friendly and saves the lives of animals. Many animals die each year after consuming trash which they think is food. Take a few hours on Saturday, September 19 and help clean up Orange County beaches, creeks, parks, and canyons.

Lou Correa Hosting Personal Safety Workshop on July 15

State Senator Lou Correa is sponsoring a personal safety and self defense demonstration workshop on Wednesday, July 15 from 1-3 PM at the Buena Park Senior Center, 8150 Knott Ave, Buena Park.  The workshop teaches both about self defense and personal safety laws and legislation.  

Information about local resources for help with domestic violence, sexual assault, crime prevention and personal safety will be available. The workshop is also sponsored by Toyama Karate-Do, Youth Developing Discipline through Martial Arts and Fitness, Buena Park Police Department, Buena Park Rotary Club and Buena Park Library District.

OCTA  http://www.octa.net/ will make more cuts in September 2009, in addition to the June 2009 cuts.  This round of cuts will impact your ability to get to:

These cuts make it difficult to get to work, go to school, obtain medical care, go shopping for food and clothing, get books from a public library, get to a park or beach, and conduct business with the government.  If you depend on the bus, you are slowly being cut off from being able to compete in our local economy.
