The Religious Right - Stronger Than Ever - Sat Jan 15

The Orange County Chapter of Americans United for Separation of Church and State present Eddie Tabash, National Legal Committee Chair, speaking on "The Religious Right - Stronger Than Ever."

This presentation will focus on the resurgent power of the religious right and the looming threat of theocracy.  Among the examples that will be given to demonstrate this dangerous march toward religious tyranny will be the assault on gay rights, along with other instances of the attempt to undo the modern secular state.

Eddie Tabash is a constitutional lawyer in the Los Angeles area.  He is chair of the National Legal Committee of Americans United for Separation of Church and State. He has authored numerous briefs in both the United States and California Supreme Courts, arguing for government to observe strict neutrality in matters of religion.  He takes the view that the Founders intentionally created a government in which believers and non believers are to be equal before the law.

Please join us for this important discussion and your opportunity to meet and talk with someone at the heart of the national debate on church/state separation.

Busting Through the Orange Curtain - OC Pride 2010 - August 14

Anaheim Residents Can Receive Double - Or Even Triple - Rebates on Energy Star Appliances and Measures

Anaheim Public Utilities has announced that residents can receive as much as triple the rebates for energy-efficiency improvements around their home, starting today.  The City has been offering double rebates since February 1 (which runs until June 30), for both Anaheim residents and businesses on a variety of ENERGY STAR®appliances and other qualified measures, like ENERGY STAR® windows. 

Starting today –  – thru May 23, the California Energy Commission (CEC) is offering a similar deal for residential customers through its Cash For Appliances program. Combined with Anaheim’s rebate program and the State’sCash For Appliances program, Anaheim residents could receive triple rebates during that month.  For example, a new ENERGY STAR® refrigerator or dishwasher would typically earn the buyer a $50 rebate.  But during this limited time period, Anaheim residents can expect $100 back through the City’s rebate program and receive an additional $50 through the State’s Cash For Appliances program, for a complete rebate of $150.

“The rebates, part of Anaheim Public Utilities’ existing Home Incentives Program, were designed to encourage residents to make energy-saving updates to their homes with various monetary incentives and fee waivers,” said Marcie Edwards, General Manager.  “This temporary increase in the form of a rebate is intended to generate more interest in the program and improve energy efficiency citywide,” added Edwards.

Anaheim - OC Job Fair and Expo at Gardenwalk - June 2

The second Anaheim/OC Job Fair and Expo will take place on June 2, and both employers and job seekers are invited to participate in this free event.  The 2010 Anaheim/OC Job Fair and Expo, a partnership event led by the City of Anaheim, the Anaheim Chamber of Commerce and The Shops at Anaheim GardenWalk, will be held at GardenWalk (321 W. Katella Ave.) from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.   The retail stores and restaurants will be open their regular business hours.

More than 125 employers are anticipated to be represented at the Job Fair and Expo, and career and life-skills leaders will conduct workshops throughout the day.  Job seekers can also take advantage of a resume review and a computer station for applying for jobs online.

“Job growth remains a priority in Anaheim, and we remain committed to offering opportunities for our residents to seek and connect with potential employers,” said City of Anaheim Mayor Curt Pringle.   “Our goal is to support the job market, and the 2010 Anaheim/OC Job Fair and Expo is one way we can help so everyone benefits.”

Mayor Pringle has again asked Harry Sidhu, Mayor Pro Tem for the City of Anaheim, to take the lead in this job fair initiative.  Last year, in its inaugural year, the Job Fair and Expo featured more than 100 employers, approximately 2,200 available jobs, and drew a crowd of 7,500.  One in four job applicants were interviewed as a result of the 2009 event, with more than a third being hired.

Mission Viejo to Host 1st Annual Wheelchair Tennis Classic July 3-4

Registration is available starting May 1 for the City of Mission Viejo's First Annual Wheelchair Tennis Classic July 3-4. 

Wheelchair players from across the state will participate in this spectacular tournament that will host an Open, A, B, C and Junior division for both singles and doubles, allowing a broad spectrum of players to participate. 

More than 60 players are expected to enter and compete at the Marguerite Tennis Center, 23840 Marguerite Parkway. The entry fee is $40 for both singles and doubles. Registration will be available at tennislink.usta.comfrom May 1 through June 26.

Smart Gardening - May 15

What does it take to be a Smart Gardener?  Knowledge – and application of that knowledge – about irrigation, soil care, pest control, energy and wildlife.  Sound complicated?  The Master Gardeners will simplify it as they provide tips for you to save time, money and create a healthier garden.   If you want to be a Smart Gardener, attend this workshop.

The Orange County Great Park Garden Workshop Series, led by the University of California Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners of Orange County , is part of a program designed to introduce community members to the Farm and Food Lab, where they can learn about sustainable home gardening practices for a healthy lifestyle.

Career Fair - May 14

The City of Mission Viejo is joining forces with the Orange County Business Service Center, the City of Lake Forest and the Lake Forest Chamber of Commerce to host a Career Fair on Friday, May 14.

The Career Fair is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Community Resource Center at the OC Church of Christ, located at 10 Goodyear in Irvine.

The fair is free to the public, and businesses can reserve a table to recruit potential employees for $50. 

People who attend the fair can receive complimentary resume review services from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and take advantage of three business workshops. The first workshop, Networking for Survival, is from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m.; the Interviewing Insight workshop follows from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., with Job Search Do's and Don'ts taking place from 12:30 to 1:15 p.m.

Free Vision Screening and California Telephone Access Program Equipment - May 4

The San Juan Capistrano Senior Center on May 4 will offer free vision screening and CTAP telephone equipment for folks who have trouble with vision, hearing, memory and mobility.

The screening and distribution program is from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the San Juan Capistrano Community Center, 25925 Camino del Avion. Optometrists Ryan Onishi and Joseph Kikumoto will offer free vision screenings.

Qualified participants can receive telephone equipment from the California Telephone Access Program (CTAP). Just come with a CTAP application that has been signed by a certifying agent to certify your disability.

The specialized telephones and devices make dialing easier, allow for hands-free operation, flash incoming calls and more.

Reservations for this free program are required and are available by calling the San Juan Capistrano Community Services Department at 949-493-5911.

Aliso Viejo Aquatic Center Opens on May 1 with Free Swimming

Residents who drop by the Aliso Viejo Aquatic Center on May 1 will enjoy free swimming all day and an up-and-coming singing sensation who's making waves in the music industry.

The Opening Season Pool Party at 29 Santa Barbara is from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, May 1. The celebration includes free entry; fun-filled games and activities for all ages; Oasis Cafe specials; and the talents of Yazzie Jay, a rising Orange County talent who is making her transition into the L.A. music scene. Yazzie, 17, is a self-taught artist, who has taught herself the piano, drums, bass, acoustic guitar and electric guitar. 

With a 25-meter pool, recreation pool, splash pad and toddler wading pool, the Aliso Viejo Aquatic Center quickly became the hub of activity after its premiere last year. Offering fee-based swimming programs, activities, parties and more, the facility is a popular venue for families, kids, adults, groups and organizations alike. 

Guests to the Aquatic Center can enjoy recreation and lap swimming, water aerobics, pool parties, the Oasis Cafe, cabanas and lots of fun activities. The Oasis Cafe offers fresh, delicious, convenient and affordable fare. The center has locker facilities, restrooms and a patio with outdoor fireplace for lounging and relaxing with family and friends.  Season and monthly passes are available for residents who want to enjoy the facilities throughout the season. 

The Aquatic Center is conveniently located at Aliso Creek Road and Glenwood Drive, next to the Aliso Viejo Conference Center.
