Orange County Water District manages the groundwater basin under Orange County.  The district draws water from the basin for sale and operates the Groundwater Replenishment System to prevent ocean water from creeping into the basin and to allow water recycling.

Service Area

This agency buys water, resells and wholesales water to 28 districts/retail water agencies, and represents the interests of 28 districts/retail water districts to the Metropolitan Water District.  MWDOC is building a test ocean desalination facility in Dana Point.  The district had a $128 million budget for FY 2008-09.

This agency is a water distributor/reseller/wholesaler.  The Metropolitan Water District buys the water and distributes the water to 26 member angencies. The 26 member agencies sell the water to 300 subagencies (local water companies) or directly to consumers.  The FY 2007-08 budget was about $1.98 billion.

Service Area:  About 5200 square miles in Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura Counties.

Apply for Open Seat on MWDOC

Apply for the open seat on the Municipal Water District of Orange County (MWDOC). This very rare opportunity to be considered for an appointment can jump start your political career.  A water board appointee gets to run as an incumbent and often is not challenged in an election.  

When you run for another office, you can list "Water District Director" on the ballot designation. Water district directors get to meet a lot of people and talk with many parts of the government.  Water district positions are one opening into a successful political career.

The seat is in Division 6 and is left vacant by the resignation of Ergun Bakall.

The area Division 6 covers includes Santa Margarita Water District, Trabuco Canyon Water District, Santiago County Water District, and the eastern part of Irvine Ranch Water District.  

Key Dates in the Process

Friday July 16 - Application packets should be ready for pickup at MWDOC headquarters at 18700 Ward St, Fountain Valley, CA 92708.  Call Maribeth Goldsby, Secretary of the Board to find out if packets are ready. The main number is 714-963-3058

Friday, July 31 - All applications must be completed and returned to headquarters.

Week of August 3 (tentative) - Special board meeting held to discuss applicants.  An ad hoc committee will be appointed to review applications and make a recommendation on the appointment.

Wednesday, August 19 - Appointment to be discussed at regular board meeting.  If this meeting is like most meetings discussing an appointment, the appointee will be named that day.
