Brigadier General James P. Combs and Dr. Ding Jo H. Currie received awards at the 7th Annual Flag Day Ceremony at the Garden Grove Elks Lodge. The ceremony was sponsored by the 67th AD Area Wide Alliance.
The ceremony featured a capella music from the Blue Wave Special Quartet, a color guard from the 40th Infantry Division of the California National Guard from Los Alamitos, and food provided by Costco and Polly's Pies. The menu was an American classic - hot dogs and apple pie.
The 2 awards given support patriotism and social acitivism. The Consuelo Nieto Award for Patriotic Activism is named after long time 67th AD activist Dr. Consuelo Nieto. Her spouse, Paul Sandorff, helped to present the award to Dr. Jing Jo H. Currie. Dr. Currie, an immigrant to America, spoke about what being an American means to her and how the symbol of the flag has made her proud. The Chauncey Alexander Award for Social Progress was given to Brigadier General James P. Combs for his work at the Los Alamitos base to help soldiers re-integrate successfully into society and family life after coming back from overseas. Gen. Combs spoke passionately about how difficult it is for some of these soldiers who have served their country to continue their lives after returning home.
